Candlelighters Youth Council
Luisa Diaz, Teen Coordinator

Candlelighters provides social opportunities for teens with cancer or with a sibling with cancer. Whether they are bowling, going to a movie, or planning an Easter Egg Hunt for the little kids, these gatherings provide a chance for teens to know they are not facing cancer alone.

Teen Prom
Candlelighters is delighted to announce that our Candlelighters Youth Council will offer a sixth annual “Dream Night” Prom. Luisa Diaz is the committee chairperson for this year’s event. Luisa is a leukemia survivor who has battled this disease through two transplants, and now is ready to give back to other teens the magical experience she benefited from herself.

The challenge for a child diagnosed with cancer is multifaceted, but for a teen the experience is far more personal, affecting many of the expected norms of teen years. The treatments frequently induce hair loss, weight changes and other physical challenges. Months of hospitalizations disrupt the usual social activities, and important milestones are often missed.

Carina Groves created “Dream Night” Prom as her high school senior project. The event was a tremendous success, and afforded a magical and very healing experience for the many teens like Luisa who participated. Candlelighters teens have decided the prom should continue as an annual event.

“Dream Night” is scheduled for February 2011.
